Pumpkin Carving

Lily carved her first pumpkin today. It wasn't something I'd actually planned to do. Halloween has never been huge in our home, we don't tend to do trick or treating, and if we were going to have a party it would be for my brother as it's his birthday. So when it comes to pumpkin carving, I'm a bit of a beginner.

Also, with the move coming up, I wouldn't be able to face the prospect of doing a messy activity at home. I'm currently navigating between washing, toys and packing boxes, and I'm not doing very well with the stress of it all.

With all that in mind, I headed off this morning in the light drizzle to Lilymae's. It has quickly become one of my preferred spots for taking Lily and Ollie as I love how friendly the staff are and Lily is always asking to go there. As it is half-term and Halloween they are running a new timetable this week and so I thought we'd give pumpkin carving a go.

We were the first ones to arrive and I'm glad that we got a head start before it got busy. I even had time to treat myself to a slice of Ricky's delicious 90% chocolate tart. For breakfast. It was naughty but I don't care. (Remind me I said that the next time I complain about hating my size).

Lily chose her pumpkin and we got started. Obviously, she wasn't going to have access to anything sharp and so I got her started before letting her loose with blunt instruments and only assisting her if she got really stuck.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much she enjoyed it and actually, how good she was at doing a lot by herself. It still astounds me how independent she is now and very confident when it comes to arty and messy activities. I didn't think she would like scooping out the insides because she used to hate getting her hands dirty but I think that was one of her favourite parts of the activity today. She spent a lot of time squishing the pulp and playing with the seeds. She wasn't keen on the smell which cracked me up when she asked whether the pumpkin had done a poo!

After all the scooping she drew the face on by herself and I started off the carving for her before letting her do the rest with a blunt dinner knife. You can see from the photo that she took it very seriously!

Seeing how proud she was of her finished pumpkin, I am so pleased that I decided to give this ago. It was so much easier than I anticipated and I don't even have to clean up after. Win win!

That's a great pumpkin. She did really well and looks totally engrossed. We carved a pumpkin today and found it rather tricky.

I was surprised how much she took to it - she's not usually keen on getting messy and I thought I was being ambitious letting her do the face herself... Hope it goes well! x

I'm pleased she could do so much and let me take some pics! It's hard to capture it and take part at the same time. x
