A week ago you started school.
I was not ready.
But you were. Definitely ready, you have walked into school with a smile on your face everyday since, confident and comfortable.
I cried a little the first time you said "Just go Mummy!" as I hovered around you anxiously, wondering if I should give you one last hug.
Today you lined up with all your friends in the playground and walked smartly up to the classroom holding your teacher's hand and my heart was so full I thought it would burst.
School is exactly what you need. The routine and the adventure combined, fun and learning, rules and freedom.
I know you're going to shine.
You've grown so much over the last few months. Sometimes it's been really hard. I know that later in life your strong will and single-minded determination are going to be your strengths, but right now it feels like I spend a lot of time just telling you off and I hate that. Instead, I love the times we can still play, read and snuggle.
I feel like I need to impart some wisdom, to tell you to make the most of Reception and enjoy building this foundation for learning. But really, I think you've got this. You're happy enough to go in and do your own thing, in your own way and on your own terms.
I just want you to know that if there is ever a time when it gets tough, I'm going to be here for you. You can charge right in and grasp what you want but I will be here always, never out of sight, supporting you in everything.
And I'm not alone. Your big sister has gone before you and she will be there to give you a helping hand. You know what Lily is like, she takes responsibilities seriously, so please give her the chance to look after you just a little bit. We all know you don't really need it.
Remember to be patient and kind with others, there are 29 other children in your class and sometimes they're going to need a friend, you have everything you need to comfort them or make them laugh or to help them.
And be kind to me, your Mummy who is adjusting to a new life with two big children. No longer babies but always my babies.
I loved you from the moment I knew you existed and I love you now. Enjoy the adventure my darling boy.
