Autumn with Aldi Mamia

I feel at the moment like I can actually feel the time passing by. Maybe because it's Lily's fourth birthday on Wednesday, Ollie is 18 months old and next month marks the end of our first year in our new home. Or maybe it's just that time of year, when everything seems to be winding down and the leaves are beginning to turn yellow, then brown. I can feel the days ticking away to winter.

Autumn is by far my favourite time of year and I'm already looking forward to woodland walks, seasonal activities and the build up to Christmas. Although I don't have anything against wet and windy weather, I still prefer the crisp Autumn sun and love spending as much time as possible out and about or in the garden.

Last weekend we were sent a fantastic hamper full of goodies from the Aldi Mamia Range to take out with us and showcase how easy it is to provide yummy, healthy food for your kids whilst on the go (and without spending a fortune, obviously). With the weekend displaying both welly and picnic weather we had a few days out in the garden and made the most with some impromptu picnics.

Our hamper contained a variety of purees in pouches, fruit pots, rice cakes and an Apple and Blackberry drink. The products were 100% organic, with no added sugar and packed full of fruit.

At first glance I didn't expect the children to really enjoy the pouches but they disappeared so quickly I didn't even get the chance to take a decent photograph! I tried the bananas and apple one myself (after wrestling it from Lily) and can vouch for it's flavour.

I was impressed that the fruit puree pouches start at only 59p - a whole 20p cheaper than the nearest equivalent, and yet they tasted really good. Bargain. As they're in a pouch instead of a glass jar they're handy for popping in a changing bag and feeding baby whilst out and about, I've found them easy to squeeze out onto a spoon or the children can squeeze them straight into their mouths when they're older.

The favourite item in the hamper for the kids was, perhaps predictably, the raspberry flavoured rice cakes. Ollie kept making 'Mmm' noises when munching on these and I even caught Lily trying to sneak some more. I would definitely pick these up in store as they were a great easy snack for being outside and for keeping some in your bag for snacking emergencies and only cost 65p.

An easily overlooked product, the apple and blackcurrant juice drink was brilliant. Although both my kids enjoy drinking water, they will still jump at the chance to drink something with a bit more flavour and having this option that was ready to drink, with no added sugar, was perfect.

Unlike the pouches, I thought the fruit pots would be best consumed at the table. I often buy fruit pots for Lily and Ollie to have at breakfast or as a dessert and they didn't notice any difference between the Aldi version and our normal branded variety. I can imagine Lily doing one of those adverts: "I like this fruit pot and I like this fruit pot, and chocolate. I like lots of chocolate."

It's a shame that we don't have an Aldi in High Wycombe - any Mum's who live with an Aldi nearby have no idea how lucky they are! It's great to know that you don't have to spend a fortune to provide high-quality, great tasting and organic snacks for your child, especially when out and about this Autumn.
